- An NYPD Sgt. Hugh Barry was charged Wednesday for committing murder when he shot a mentally ill woman named Deborah Danner in October 2016 inside her apartment in Castle Hill neighborhood in the Bronx.
A Grand Jury was requested and denied before the railroading began. The basis for the charges?
- Barry responded to a call that said that a mentally ill woman was behaving “irrationally” in her apartment. When Barry reached her apartment, Danner reportedly had scissors. Barry had been successful in persuading her to drop her scissors however, she picked up a baseball bat instead and charged towards him. Barry shot Danner twice in the torso, after which she was taken to a local medical centre and later succumbed to her injuries.
So evidently, a bat is not a lethal weapon, even in New York. We will make the same offer to the Bronx DA that we have made to numerous reporters, politicians and state's attorneys here over the years:
- We will equip you with a full compliment of less-than-lethal weapons (baton, Taser) and police equipment (cuffs, vest, etc.)
- We will then hide in a controlled environment, preferably a bedroom with a closet, armed only with a baseball bat.
- You will respond to the "scene" and place us into "custody" using all of your extensive police knowledge.
You win if you can place us into handcuffs with no muss, no fuss.
You lose if you hurt our feelings, we suffer any bruise, we bleed, or we happen to beat you to death with the bat.
All we need is a pre-signed letter of your declining to press charges no matter the outcome. Put up or shut up.
